Santuario de Loiola

Description

The colossal Loiola shrine building was constructed in the 17th century. This monument was one of the most unique Baroque constructions in the world, the work of the Italian architect Carlo Fontana.

With a circular layout crowned by a spectacular dome, the basilica was built in honour of San Ignacio de Loiola, the founder of the Compañía de Jesús. Most notable inside is its major altarpiece, exceptional both for the use of noble materials (marble, jasper and alabaster) and for the design, which is considered to be one of the best of Ignacio de Ibero. The sculptures include, most notably, the saint of the temple, San Ignacio de Loiola, which is sculpted in silver.

Moreover, the Shrine contains the tower house of the Loiolas, where the Saint was born in 1491.

Loiola Shrine also offers us the opportunity to stroll around the extensive gardens, where we can appreciate the majestic building.
