We are Nekatur. The Basque Country agrotourism establishment, country house and rural tourist apartment owners association.

We count on over 70% of rural accommodation available in the Basque Country. Nekatur has been operating for many years, continually improving service for all affiliated establishments and their guests.

Our Origins

The baserritarras. These are our origins.

Baserritarras embody a lifestyle with an economy rooted in small, family-run agricultural and livestock farms, which have shaped many of our customs over the centuries.

These small farms saw their survival threatened due to competition with large producers; however, we have always recognised their essential role in preserving our land's natural and cultural heritage.

That is why a programme was set up in 1988 which, thanks to the Basque Government and the three Provincial Councils, allows baserri owners to offer accommodation services to grow their economy and preserve our historical legacy.

The first agrotourism accommodation establishment in the Basque Country opened in 1990, and the first country house in 1991.

This year, 1991, also saw the birth of Nekatur, the Basque Country rural accommodation association.

We have come a long way since then.

Our association hosts 3 types of accommodation:

Agrotourism Establishments

“Agrotourism” combines the terms “agriculture” and “tourism” to describe accommodation, with or without board, in farmhouses or traditional establishments within farming operations where tourists can engage in agricultural or livestock activities.

Agrotourism establishments must have a minimum capacity of 4 places.

Maximum capacity, excluding extra beds, is as follows:

  • Accommodation in individual rooms: 12 places.
  • Accommodation in fully leased properties: 18 places.
  • Mixed accommodation: 16 places.

Maximum capacity including extra places is 24 places.

The maximum number of individual rooms is 4.

Country Houses

Country houses are countryside homes that offer accommodation services, with or without board, in buildings featuring typical rural architecture.

Country houses must have a minimum capacity of 4 places.

Rural Tourist Apartments

Rural tourist apartments are apartments in rural areas, located in buildings or constructions that reflect the region's traditional architecture.

Tourist apartments have a maximum capacity of 24 places.

Capacity depends on the number of beds in the bedrooms, including bunk beds, and by the number of convertible beds in other rooms.

Sofa beds can be used in the living room or dining room, up to a maximum of two places.

Our Mission

We are a responsible rural accommodation association committed to promoting sustainable tourism in the Basque Country to preserve our cultural legacy, natural environment and way of life.

Achieving this requires a strategy that promotes continuous improvement, ensuring the continuity and competitiveness of all affiliated establishments.

This strategy embodies a series of values shared among affiliates and reflected in the service offered to visitors:

Reassurance

Excellence

Cooperation

Empathy

Transparency

Our values are the driving force behind our daily efforts to ensure our association grows in both size and, above all, responsibility.

We aim to provide a comprehensive rural experience for our visitors, inviting them to explore the Basque Country's landscapes and culture, thereby strengthening the agricultural sector and promoting sustainable, inclusive rural tourism.

If you share these values, Nekatur is for you.
