San Telmo Museum

The impressive canvases of Sert, the 16th century cloisters, the ethnographic section and the painting collection provide different attractions in one single place, San Telmo, which is currently being refurbished.

San Telmo is set in a building in the Old District of San Sebastian, which is worth a visit in itself. Set up as a Dominican convent, it was used as an artillery barracks before being converted into a museum. Particularly notable are the cloisters, dating from the 16th century, and the primitive church, which is covered by very large chiaroscuro canvases by José María Sert.
Immersed in a redefinition process which envisages the extension of the building, the museum shows the collective history of Gipuzkoa, combining ethnographic and archaeological sections with collections of fine arts. A classic European painting section includes works by El Greco and Rubens, whilst a panorama of Basque painting gives a place of privilege to Ignacio Zuloaga.
