Santa María de Gueñes Church

The monumental church of Santa María was built in the 16th century. The temple integrates Gothic (doorway and initial section) and Renaissance elements (rest of the church). It has three naves divided into four sections. The domes, the arches of which rest on columns, are four-pointed stellar vaults.

The southern doorway is spectacular and is richly decorated. The style is known as Catholic Monarchs style, mixing Gothic and Renaissance elements. The entrance doorway is a triumphal arch between pilars.

The major altarpiece, of polychromed wood, is one of the most outstanding Baroque pieces of the 17th century, in its severe and classicist phase. The Church of Santa María houses many more treasures inside, such as furniture, paintings and gold and silver work.
