Description

There are remains which show that Álava has been populated since prehistoric times. Throughout its geography you will find perfectly conserved megalithic monuments. Worthy of note are the dolmens of Aizkomendi, in Eguilaz; of Sorginetxe, in Arrízala and La Chabola de la Hechicera, in Elvillar. You can also visit towns which were inhabited right from their origins in the Iron Age through to the Middle Ages, such as Lastra Hill Fort, in Caranca, and Buradón Hill Fort, in Salinillas de Buradón.

If you are in Rioja Alavesa, make sure you visit Poblado de La Hoya, a rich archaeological site which corresponds to a settlement from the first millennium before Christ, with evidence of the different stages and evolutions of the population. The dwellings, protected by the wall, would be constructed from dried clay and stone, whilst its covering would be vegetal. The remains found allow us to state that the economy of the settlers was based on agriculture and farming.
